Beulah - A Good Man Is Easy To Kill

30th June, 2007 by Chewbacca

Beulah - The Coast Is Never ClearDescribed as alternative indie, it doesn’t get much more alternative or indie than today’s track. Beulah began in a mailroom in 1994, when the founders Miles and Bill began writing and recording - releasing their first EP, “A Small Cattle Drive In A Snow Storm” two years later. Later, they would be joined by Pat Noels and various others along the journey. Unfortunately they parted ways in 2004, but their music lives on! This track was recommended to me by my friend Matt (who’s previously provided me with some excellent music choices) who described their music as “upbeat and summery” - We may be dealing with torrential downpour as of late, but at least today it’s nice and “summery!” So here’s “A Good Man Is Easy To Kill”:

Chewier: The Fears

29th June, 2007 by Kevin

The FearsNow, as a rock fan, in general I shy away from indie as a genre. There is far too much baggage attached to it for my liking, it’s such an overly used term and I can’t help but feel many bands sound so alike it’s just pointless. Maybe it’s the apparent lack of passion so many bands seem to display - a trait which certainly does not ring true with this band. The Fears have gone through several name changes in their time together, the most recent being from Blue Sky Warning to their current moniker. So if I said their sound and style is about as diverse from conventional ‘indie’ as their names are, you might have some idea of what I mean. In short it’s big, really BIG; a grand, sweeping take on the traditional solo-less anthems of the charts today; the guitars ringing thick and rich, where usually they might be thin and forlorn. “Progressive Indie” is how the band describes it, and you can certainly hear it on this track “Impact”, already a crowd favourite.

Karnataka - Time Stands Still

29th June, 2007 by Chewbacca

Karnata - Delicate Flame of DesireAnd now it’s time for a progressive rock band from Wales! The name: Karnataka; the music: epic! The vocals of Rachel Jones are simply something else - haunting and mesmerising, and put atop of guitars and keyboards by Ian Jones and Johnathan Edwards builds amazingly deep and exciting music. Unfortunately, the band parted ways in 2004 citing “personal reasons” (that’s always the way!) but recently Ian has resurrected the band with a new lineup. The new band are currently touring, and maybe we’ll see an album soon? Here’s “Time Stands Still” from their last album “Delicate Flame of Desire”:

Okkervil River - For Real

28th June, 2007 by Chewbacca

Okkervil River - Black Sheep BoyI love this song for its apparently calm and folk feeling, and then suddenly hitting into something more. When you listen you’ll notice the defining beats - embarrassingly, I always try to drum on my desk in time - and nearly all the time fail to get in beat. “Black Sheep Boy” was Okkervil River’s fourth album since their humble beginnings in 98. They’re actually quite mainstream, with this album garnering 22nd place on Amazon.com’s Top 50 Albums of 2005. Some times thing’s pass me by! Anyway, here’s “For Real”:

David Newman - Going for a Ride

27th June, 2007 by Chewbacca

David Newman - SerenityHave you seen the Joss Whendon film Serenity? You should do! Despite being an amazing movie with a brilliant cast and excellent story, the soundtrack by David Newman is brilliant! And thus, here we are today, with my second favourite track from the soundtrack. Why not choose my first favourite? Because that’s the song that plays right before the credits roll, and I wouldn’t want to ruin the experience for you! Here’s “Going for a Ride”:

Monoral - Tuesday

26th June, 2007 by Chewbacca

Monoral - TuesdayOh come on now, of course I couldn’t resist to post this today. And yes, actually this one was saved. I was going to post it a few days back, and me being me - had to post the track “Tuesday” on the next possible Tuesday. You don’t know how hard it has been resist the urge to post this track - because I absolutely love it! Monoral are a Japanese two-man band of Anis and Ali, with lots of jumpy rocking tunes. “Tuesday” is from their upcoming album “Turbulence” which is released on 4th July. They shot to international fame when their song Kiri was used for the anime series Ergo Proxy. And that’s an awesome song too, but I’m giving you “Tuesday” this time (for now!):

Ghotti - Fly Away

25th June, 2007 by Chewbacca

GhottiGhotti was Bob (with the hat!), Howard, Ugo, Pat and a whole lot of musicianship. Unfortunately, they are no more - much to my dismay - but that doesn’t mean we can’t still enjoy their music. There’s something raw about the songs that I really loved to listen - a mix of good rock and roll, awesome lyrics and interesting vocals. They may be gone, but certainly not forgotten, and now all of their songs are available to download for free. To get you in the mood, here’s “Fly Away”:

Third Eye Blind - My Time In Exile

24th June, 2007 by Chewbacca

Third Eye Blind - A CollectionNow of all the bands I’ve played before, this is probably the most mainstream. But humour me if you will, whilst I pick today’s track. This track never appeared on any of their albums, but as I only just found out, appeared on their recent compilation album “A Collection”. But in any case, it’s a good track - and maybe you haven’t heard it before. We haven’t heard from the band since 2003, but apparently they’re working on their fourth album - maybe? Needless to say, even though its a big band, I still had a hard time finding places online to buy it. Here’s “My Time in Exile”:

The Contes - So Much for Love

23rd June, 2007 by Chewbacca

The Contes - Bleed TogetherThe Contes - brothers Steve and John Conte - formerly of Crown Jewels released their first (and so far only) album, “Bleed Together” in 2003. It’s a nice mix of quirky, poppy, feel good-y rock. In the past, the brothers have contributed to several well-known artists: Paul Simon, David Bowie, Simon & Garfunkel, even contributing to Yoko Kanno’s anime soundtracks - and yet more. Now, Steve Conte is now the lead guitarist of the reformed New York Dolls, and John joined the band interestingly called Leo’s Mum. Here’s track numero uno from their album, “So Much for Love”:

Yorico - The Blue Dawn

22nd June, 2007 by Chewbacca

Yorico - Break the CocoonYorico (or Takano Yoriko) is a Japanese singer, famously known for singing theme tunes to Speed Grapher and Black Cat. One thing I love about her “life story” is how when her family first got a NES, she used to love listening to the Super Mario Bros theme tune. That’s some awesome music taste there, you gotta admit! If you can get your way through the Japanese (or even better, if you can read Japanese) you must check out her awesome website which is based around old top down RPGs, complete with sprite graphics. And back to Yorico herself: amazing voice, excelent piano playing and some really nice tunes. If you get the chance, also check out “Break the Cocoon” on top of today’s featured track: “The Blue Dawn”:
