It might seem a stretch to describe a song as all gentle, short and epic, but Thirteen Sense’s “Undivided” is just that, on top of everything else. The band, if you haven’t heard of them are from Cornwall, UK and formed in 2003, with two albums to date: 2004’s “The Invitation” where today’s track comes from and “Contact” which was released earlier this year. Both are amazing albums, although I have more of a fond spot for the earlier. As a little interesting tidbit I gleaned from Wikipedia, Thirteen Senses are the only band to have a top 20 single in the UK. Hope that persuades you to listen to today’s brilliant track:
From blues to blues-based rock, another fantastic Stokey band to fire your imagination. Blue Origin are a 4 piece who play an exciting brand of spiky, yet melodic, classic rock. However, there are also elements of indie, blues and metal all thrown in for good measure, so they sound very much like a strange mix of AC/DC, Led Zep and some un-nameable blues artist. With searing, Plant/Johnson-esque vocals layered over the top and a pounding heavy metal drum beat beneath, “Dead End Night” has got to be one of their best songs. The band are currently playing a number of gigs in Stoke and, on the 17th August 2007, will be heading up to Liverpool for their first gig at the famous Cavern Club (yes the same club that broke the Beatles), hopefully the first of many.
Sister Hazel are another alternative southern rock band, who hail from Florida, and since 1993 have been bringing us some brilliant cheery songs – with six albums to date, one of them reaching platinum status. Today’s song is taken from their 2003 album, “Chasing Daylight” which although didn’t sell as well as their other albums, features some jivey music that’ll get you going. The track is “One Love”, and here’s hoping you’ll be rocking along to it!
Sorry for the missing two days – a combination of work and illness prevented me from getting much done, but we’re back today with one of my favourite, and admittedly previously featured, artists: Scott Matthew. But since I did promise I would, I have to! But there’s that and I just love his music. Once again the song is a perfect example of Scott Matthew’s strange and wonderful voice – it’s different, but I think he pulls it off. Once again, it’s taken from a Yoko Kanno project (so much so on this weblog I might as well call it the Yoko Kanno and Friends music blog) but you can’t go wrong. I hope you enjoy, at least somewhat as much as I do, “Beauty Is Within Us”:
Porcupine Tree are a fabulous British progrock band started back in 1987 and in that time grown from strength to strength and released nine studio albums, their latest in April of this year. Today however, I’m going to play you one of their tracks which isn’t quite as proggy as the rest of their material, but its a brilliant song that was only released as a bonus track on the Europen release of their popular – and first major-label release – 2002 “In Absentia” album. It’s a dreamy, poppy, rocky, whatchamacallit song with dark undertones but amazingly upbeat melody. I have the urge to listen to it all the time, even though it is a bit of a departure from their more traditional tracks. Enjoy Porcupine Tree’s “Drown with Me”:
theEndorphins are a melancholic progressive-ish rock band from the Netherlands formed in 2003. The three band members Astrid van der Veen, Arjan Hoekstra and Dennis Edelenbosch create a smooth mix of music with many different instruments and dueling dual (see what I did there?) vocals. Astrid has also worked with previously featured Ayreon, creating the progressive metal Ambeon project. Whilst looking for labels to work with, they have already put out several songs, available for free from their theEndorphan (see what they did there?) website, but they say their real best performance is in live shows. This track is “See It Clearer Than It Ever Was”:
Molmott, a four-piece rock band from the Mie Prefecture, Japan started way back when in 1997, before finally deciding on their name in 1999. They aren’t a particularly big band, unlike some of my previous Japanese presentations, and in fact, I found them completely by accident, whilst searching for “Monoral” – a result came up with “Monoral Wonderland”, the name of their latest 2004 album. Unfortunately since then, nothing else has been released, and according to the Japanese Wikipedia article, they are considered inactive. This track, taken from the album, is called “Park”:
Kane are a southern rock band formed back in 1998 in Los Angeles. In 2000, they put together all they could and released their first album, self-titled, independently. After working their way up, and many tours receiving rave reviews, they released their second album four years later, “Live in London”, where today’s track originates from. A lot of atmosphere comes out of the song, so I can only imagine live performances must be quite stellar. Now signed with a label, they are working on their first studio album, due out later this year. Here’s “The Chase”, which is, as they describe, the first song they ever wrote.
Releasing her debut album, “Wreck of the Day” in 2005, Anna Nalick, an American singer-songwriter, has gone from strength to strength, with her first single, “Breathe (2 AM)” reaching grandiose heights in the US single charts selling 3x platinum, and then her album reaching gold status. Yet, I still hadn’t heard her until my friend’s random assorted MP3 CD came loaded with a track, and it was enough to pique my interest. This is one of my favourite tracks on the album, “Citadel”:
The Motorhomes, until late 2004, were a five-piece band from Sweden complete with pop-heavy feel-good songs. After two albums with several big hits, even abroad, the band split in 2004 after their front man, lead singer Mattias Edlund, left because of personal reasons. Another sad end to a pretty damn good band. “I Wanna Make You Sing” is taken from their second last album, 2002’s “Long Distance Runner”:
