Thunder - Fly on the Wall

31st August, 2007 by Chewbacca

Thunder - Behind Closed DoorsThunder, the British blues rock band we previously featured a while back has been hammering out music ever since their humble beginnings in 1989 when Danny Bowes’ and Luke Morley’s previous band, Terraplane, split up. The previous track was from after their split up and reforming - today’s track is from their last album before the aforementioned split: 1995’s “Behind Closed Doors”. It features the same hard-hitting blues rock, and… admittedly quite dodgy lyrics! Here is Thunder’s “Fly on the Wall”:

Coheed and Cambria - The Running Free

30th August, 2007 by Chewbacca

Coheed and Cambria - The Running FreeSo, if you didn’t already know, Coheed and Cambria tells the story (through progressive rock concept albums) of The Armory Wars: following the adventures of Claudio Kilgannon who crosses the star system, Heaven’s Fence, to seek help from his uncle, The Prize Fighter Inferno, after his parents, two Iro-Bots called Coheed and Cambria are tricked into killing their children by Supreme Tri-Mage, Wilhelm Ryan. Confused!? I know you are!! It gets even better: today’s track comes from “No World for Tomorrow” (out in October!) which is the second volume of the fourth album (”Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV”) which is the third album they’ve released - since the first in the series will come last. Utterly confused?!?! Yes, I’m glad. You can just ignore all of that and listen to some good rocking music from the way of Coheed and Cambria, here’s “The Running Free”:

Straylight Run - The Tension and the Terror

29th August, 2007 by Chewbacca

Straylight Run - Straylight RunWhilst still a part of Taking Back Sunday, Josh Nolan wrote a few songs that didn’t fit - and thus was born the idea of Straylight Run. After leaving the band, he formed Straylight Run in 2003, and released their first eponymous album in October 2004. Since then, they have released an EP and a further full-length album titled “The Needles The Space”. They are another band which many label as “emo” - yet another genre thrown around so much its meaning is… well meaningless! Many say they despise any music from the genre - but give them a listen, and then you can decide whether you like them or not. Here’s Straylight Run’s “The Tension and Terror”:

Mew - Snow Brigade

28th August, 2007 by Chewbacca

Mew - FrengersAlthough Wikipedia describes them as indie rock, there’s much more to Danish band Mew than that basic generalisation (another reason why genres suck!) - there’s a brilliant, and very different, approach to Mew’s music which, coupled with the awesome high-pitched voice of Jonas Bjerre, makes for great listening. This track is my favourite from their 2003 album, “Frengers” - which as the band describes is a portmanteau of the words “friend” and “stranger” or someone who is “not quite a friend but not quite a stranger”. Take a listen to “Snow Brigade” by Mew:

Noel Gallagher - Teotihuacan

27th August, 2007 by Chewbacca

The X-Files: The AlbumAnd we’re back! Noel Gallagher, who I’m sure you’ll know as one fifth of the band Oasis, contributed to the album for the X-Files movie and the song as the credits began to play. I’d hope you’ll notice a distinct change in the music - an instrumental, electronic, new-age piece that is always good listening for me for a chillout track. As for the name, we can only presume he refers to the Teotihuacán. It’s a long track at over seven minutes long, perhaps it’ll help you take solace in the fact I’ve been missing for over a week! Enjoy Noel Gallagher’s “Teotihuacan”:

Small Hiatus

23rd August, 2007 by Chewbacca

After 100 songs, I’m just taking a small hiatus from updating mostly daily (with a few small exceptions) whilst my tiredness takes over. Once recuperated, we’ll be back in action with new music and new tastes to satiate your musical needs! Sorry for not updating soon enough - just been absolutely exhausted. For now, I hope you’ll enjoy some of our greatest hits of the previous three months:

Aqualung - Good Times Gonna Come

18th August, 2007 by Chewbacca

Aqualung - AqualungAqualung, A.K.A. Matt Hales from merry ol’ England came to the public eye when his top track, “Strange and Beautiful” was used on an advert for the VW Beetle in 2002, and in the US for the song “Brighter than Sunshine” which was used in the film A Lot Like Love. But of course, you’ve probably heard them before - so let’s play a lesser-known but just-as-awesome track from his eponymous debut album, entitled “Good Times Gonna Come”:

Rival Schools - Used For Glue

17th August, 2007 by Chewbacca

Rival Schools - United by FateLast month we had Used For Glue’s Light it Up, and the month before that, Sweet Return by Cardia - where’s this going? Well, before Ian Love left Walter Schreifels’ band “Rival Schools”, they put out a song called “Used For Glue”. It all comes back to basics, and since I promised some time ago that Rival Schools would get their much-deserved mention, right now was as good a time as any! The band was (until Love’s departure eventually fractured the band) a post-hardcore supergroup of sorts - with members coming from a plethora of already recognised bands. Their first, and only, full length album “United by Fate” was released in 2001, and featured today’s track:

The Servant - Dripping on your Maths

16th August, 2007 by Chewbacca

The Servant - MathematicsThe Servant, we’ve seen them before here on Something Chewie, but here’s something that you’ll appreciate is different from our last featured track. Personally, I feel there are three different feels to The Servant - there’s the traditional, whacky, what-the-hell-is-going-on music featured mostly in their debut album, “The Servant” and their two earlier EPs (one, “Mathematics” is where today’s track comes from); then there’s the “Cells” feel - when I show people that track and then introduce them to their other tracks, they’re freaked out; finally there’s the feel of their new album, “How to Destroy a Relationship”, which I think you’ll find is easy to argue follows more in the popular indie feel (although with slight hints of their previous style). Personally, I’m a fan of all three - but the first - the whacked-out - is my definite fave. So, in that case: here’s “Dripping on your Maths”:

Grandaddy - Pull the Curtains

15th August, 2007 by Chewbacca

Grandaddy - Excerpts from the Diary of Todd ZillaGrandaddy, until last year, were an indie rock band from California who were known for their more experimental electronic sound in their music. Eventually in early 2006, they decided to split up the band - partly due to sticking to their plan to not release on major labels or play at typical Ticketmaster gigs. Still, since 1992, they’ve put out a bunch of great songs - with incredibly strange topics - from robots to wildlife, all featuring their typical indie/folky/rocky stylings. Today’s particular track was taken from their 2005 EP, “Excerpts from the Diary of Todd Zilla”, and maybe the album title might help you set the mood. Enjoy “Pull the Curtains”:
