Alvin Lee – Lost in Love

11th September, 2007 by Chewbacca

Alvin Lee - Pure Blues So, I have been accused of having no real blues track to fully quantify having a blues category on Something Chewie (previous outings have been too much rock, not enough blues!) and so, open to suggestion and admittedly unwise in the area – I was presented with today’s track, which definitely doesn’t scrimper on the blues. As an instrumental track, “Lost in Love” has to wow you with only his music, and it surely does that, with powerful soulful playing to get you right into the full of it. Of course, Alvin Lee is a big name (being around since the ’60s), and although Something Chewie is about finding new artists, sometimes it nices to… “re-find” artists. I hope you enjoy Alvin Lee’s “Lost in Love”:

Thunder – Fly on the Wall

31st August, 2007 by Chewbacca

Thunder - Behind Closed DoorsThunder, the British blues rock band we previously featured a while back has been hammering out music ever since their humble beginnings in 1989 when Danny Bowes’ and Luke Morley’s previous band, Terraplane, split up. The previous track was from after their split up and reforming – today’s track is from their last album before the aforementioned split: 1995’s “Behind Closed Doors”. It features the same hard-hitting blues rock, and… admittedly quite dodgy lyrics! Here is Thunder’s “Fly on the Wall”:

The Cult – Painted On My Heart

3rd August, 2007 by Chewbacca

Gone in Sixty Seconds - Official SoundtrackToday’s song was recommended by my friend David who had this very astute sentence to say: “I’ve got a banging song you can put on Something Chewie!” I couldn’t say no, so here we are with The Cult’s “Painted On My Heart”. You’ve most likely heard about their background, so there’s no need to go into detail – but this song was released in 2000 after their reunion from their 4 year hiatus, and was part of the soundtrack to the film “Gone in 60 Seconds”. It’s rocking, so give it a listen!

Chewier: Blue Origin

29th July, 2007 by Kevin

Blue OriginFrom blues to blues-based rock, another fantastic Stokey band to fire your imagination. Blue Origin are a 4 piece who play an exciting brand of spiky, yet melodic, classic rock. However, there are also elements of indie, blues and metal all thrown in for good measure, so they sound very much like a strange mix of AC/DC, Led Zep and some un-nameable blues artist. With searing, Plant/Johnson-esque vocals layered over the top and a pounding heavy metal drum beat beneath, “Dead End Night” has got to be one of their best songs. The band are currently playing a number of gigs in Stoke and, on the 17th August 2007, will be heading up to Liverpool for their first gig at the famous Cavern Club (yes the same club that broke the Beatles), hopefully the first of many.

Chewier: The Black Apples

12th July, 2007 by Kevin

The Black ApplesAt this juncture, an important point should be made about the Chewier section of this site: every gem of a band listed here has been thoroughly researched and, unless otherwise stated, this means one of us has been to a suitably mind-blowing gig by said band. It is often said that nothing quite compares to a band in a live setting and certainly this is the case with “The Black Apples”, a 3 piece electronic blues band from Stoke. What initially strikes you about the guys is their no-nonsense approach to the music – they strut confidently on-stage and blast through their exciting and electrifying set with the precision of a guided missile. The songs are well-constructed, with hard-hitting riffs and traditional bluesy lyrical commentaries, yet with a 21st century twist. If you thought the blues genre was just about slow, ponderous songs, full of super extended guitar solos – think again! The Apples are currently selling a 12 track Live EP which showcases most of the live set and are regularly playing shows across the country.

Sam Brookes – Mr No Identity Man

4th July, 2007 by Chewbacca

Sam BrookesSam Brookes, a singer/songwriter from Bath, presents a nice and easy going compound of folk and blues in creating his songs. Armed only with his guitar, occasionally a harmonica and his grand voice, he apparently gives quite a performance. My girlfriend who forced (:P) recommended me to post this track has seen him live in and around local pubs of her area, where he gives off an confident and crowd-pleasing performance. This short track is “Mr No Identity Man”, a staple to his music:

Thunder – Loser

16th June, 2007 by Chewbacca

Thunder - Shooting at the SunThunder is a big fave band of mine, hailing from the home country, Thunder is blues rock band composed of Danny Bowes and Luke Morley and friends. After the band split in 2000 and reformed in 2002, they started their own record label to get away from the pressures of record companies, and since then has put out three albums of great quality – although, it must be said, you can split the band’s works into the “1989-2000″ era and the “2002-2007″ era – but both rock, so don’t bother! This is an acoustic version of “Loser” which appeared on “Shooting at the Sun”:

Brighteye Brison – Late

27th May, 2007 by Chewbacca

Brighteye Brison - StoriesGoing far beyond concept albums, Brighteye Brison really is a concept artist – there musical outlets tell the tales and myths of Commander Brighteye of the spaceship Brison. Okay, it may be a little out-there – very progressive, but its certainly some impressive music. Also, it serves as my apology for posting yesterday’s track late. (Oh! Am I incredibly sorry for that terrible pun/connection/thing!) “(Am I Too) Late” comes from the five-piece Swedish band’s second studio album, “Stories”.
