British rock band, Thunder, constantly rate quite high in my list of all-time favourites. Formed in 1989, split up in 2000 and reformed in 2002, they’ve put out eight studio albums in their time. As I always tend to mention, there’s a slightly different Thunder in the old and the new, which can be said about many long-lasting bands. (*cough* Aerosmith *cough*) However, where Thunder succeeds is that the newer Thunder tracks haven’t come under any such hard criticism from original fans. So, today we’re going to select a track from their latest album, 2006’s “Robert Johnson’s Tombstone†– in typical Thunder style – a slow, building-up-to-epic rock ballad about a guy comforting a friend whos been unlucky in love. Let’s just get to the music, so, without further ado, enjoy today’s track, “A Million Facesâ€:
Let’s quickly brush over the fact I missed Wednesday, *ahem* and get straight on to the music! Today’s track comes from Tom Fox, a singer-songwriter from the UK who released his debut album, “Midnight Rain†in 2004. Songs from his album and his follow up EP have apparently received over a million downloads across the globe. Today we’re featuring a track that’s full of funk, guaranteed to get you moving! Although Tom put his music on hold to concentrate on business interests, most of the songs from his album and EP are available free to download on FoxTunes.net or for purchase on several music stores. But for now, enjoy today’s track, “Electric Cityâ€:
Formed in London in 2001 by a chance meeting of its founding band members, The Boxer Rebellion grouped together to make music, in their own style, epic and escapist. Their first album was released in 2005, and the band also toured extensively throughout Europe. I first heard them on the excellent series Long Way Down (starring Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman) on a soundtrack handpicked and on Peter Gabriel’s “world music†label, Real World Records. Their latest single (at the time), Broken Glass, was used as the opening music to each episode, and along with the rest of the soundtrack, really set the scene. Their description of epic and escapist music definitely fits their style, and this song is no exception to their excellent repertoire. So, enjoy today’s track, “Broken Glassâ€:
Because it’s been a while since we last featured any moody, atmospheric progressive rock, today’s track comes from British progressive rock band, Porcupine Tree. Some people I’ve given tracks of theirs to, often find it depressing music – but I think if you really get wrapped up into, the music is quite uplifting. Maybe not quite as much as the previously featured bonus track, Drown with Me. (How’s that for a depressingly-titled song with an uplifting tune?) In any case, I hope you’ll enjoy it. As always with the music on Something Chewie, I hope that you might from time to time peruse music from genres you wouldn’t usually frequent. On with the show, here’s today’s track “Glass Arm Shatteringâ€:
British five-piece band, Ben’s Brother, so named after lead singer Jamie Hartman’s bigger brother Ben, released their first album “Beta Male Fairytales†in July last year. A typically British alternative rock/pop band, the album included some great songs, quite often in the key of Keane, but that’s no bad thing. When it was released in the US later, a bonus track was included, that strikes me as even better. It was released in the UK, but just missed the top 40, reaching #41 in the charts. Apparently the band has another single on the horizon, but it might not see a release until 2009, when I guess its fairly likely another album will follow closely behind! For now, enjoy today’s track, “Stutteringâ€:
I haven’t quite decided on whether to follow a Monday-Wednesday-Friday updating regime, or an every other day schedule, or possibly even “whenever I feel like it†– although that’s no way to get myself motivated. I guess I’ll leave it up to you to discover if I post on Sunday or not! Today we have a repeat offender as Thirteen Senses return to present their music stylings with an outing from their latest album, “Contact†released last year. Although they continue to – upsettingly – fail to break through to a mainstream audience, I can always completely lose my self listening to either of their two albums. Maybe you’ll find them just as endearing, or perhaps not, but here as today’s track is Thirteen Senses’ “Follow Meâ€:
Mythic tales of fire, dragons, swords and Evermore – it doesn’t get more fantasy than this! Today’s track comes for the epic-sounding progressive rock band Ten, who we’ve seen once before. Ten’s “Evermore” comes from the aptly titled “Return to Evermore” – Ten’s seventh studio album released in 2004 – complete with what you might expect of a Ten album – fantasy concept, heavy hitting AOR, even the typical album cover. It’s a good song, and if you liked the last one, you’ll enjoy this one too. Here’s “Evermore”:
Thunder, the British blues rock band we previously featured a while back has been hammering out music ever since their humble beginnings in 1989 when Danny Bowes’ and Luke Morley’s previous band, Terraplane, split up. The previous track was from after their split up and reforming – today’s track is from their last album before the aforementioned split: 1995’s “Behind Closed Doors”. It features the same hard-hitting blues rock, and… admittedly quite dodgy lyrics! Here is Thunder’s “Fly on the Wall”:
Aqualung, A.K.A. Matt Hales from merry ol’ England came to the public eye when his top track, “Strange and Beautiful” was used on an advert for the VW Beetle in 2002, and in the US for the song “Brighter than Sunshine” which was used in the film A Lot Like Love. But of course, you’ve probably heard them before – so let’s play a lesser-known but just-as-awesome track from his eponymous debut album, entitled “Good Times Gonna Come”:
Today’s song was recommended by my friend David who had this very astute sentence to say: “I’ve got a banging song you can put on Something Chewie!” I couldn’t say no, so here we are with The Cult’s “Painted On My Heart”. You’ve most likely heard about their background, so there’s no need to go into detail – but this song was released in 2000 after their reunion from their 4 year hiatus, and was part of the soundtrack to the film “Gone in 60 Seconds”. It’s rocking, so give it a listen!
