It might seem a stretch to describe a song as all gentle, short and epic, but Thirteen Sense’s “Undivided” is just that, on top of everything else. The band, if you haven’t heard of them are from Cornwall, UK and formed in 2003, with two albums to date: 2004’s “The Invitation” where today’s track comes from and “Contact” which was released earlier this year. Both are amazing albums, although I have more of a fond spot for the earlier. As a little interesting tidbit I gleaned from Wikipedia, Thirteen Senses are the only band to have a top 20 single in the UK. Hope that persuades you to listen to today’s brilliant track:
Porcupine Tree are a fabulous British progrock band started back in 1987 and in that time grown from strength to strength and released nine studio albums, their latest in April of this year. Today however, I’m going to play you one of their tracks which isn’t quite as proggy as the rest of their material, but its a brilliant song that was only released as a bonus track on the Europen release of their popular – and first major-label release – 2002 “In Absentia” album. It’s a dreamy, poppy, rocky, whatchamacallit song with dark undertones but amazingly upbeat melody. I have the urge to listen to it all the time, even though it is a bit of a departure from their more traditional tracks. Enjoy Porcupine Tree’s “Drown with Me”:
Leeds-based “Vib Gyor” got their big break in 2005 when their tracks started to receive airplay on several national radio stations, notably BBC Radio 1, where the track “Fallen” has received significant playings. Formed in 2004, they’ve put out four EPs and two singles, most recently in March of this year with “The Secret”. The music is best described as mellow post rock / art rock reminiscent of Sigur Rós with Radiohead stylings. This track, “Silence” is both haunting and beautiful:
Yes, I did go quiet and miss a couple of days – I must apologise! And I must also thank Kevin for getting a Chewier entry so my oh-so sudden departure from the blogging world could be somewhat softened. Yeah, I’ll shut up now. Here we have “Starsailor” – to any British citizen, you’ve no doubt heard them already. After three popular albums peaking at #2 in the UK charts, and a fourth in the works, they have made a name for themselves. But this is one of those awesomely-awesome, powerful songs that I just need to get out there and show the world. It’s definitely melancholic, but its a beautiful piece of music that I always love listening to. Please, please enjoy “Way to Fall”:
Sam Brookes, a singer/songwriter from Bath, presents a nice and easy going compound of folk and blues in creating his songs. Armed only with his guitar, occasionally a harmonica and his grand voice, he apparently gives quite a performance. My girlfriend who forced (:P) recommended me to post this track has seen him live in and around local pubs of her area, where he gives off an confident and crowd-pleasing performance. This short track is “Mr No Identity Man”, a staple to his music:
Reminder: I’m currently away on holiday and unable to reply to comments or emails until Monday 9th. Tracks have been posted in advance during my absence. Please keep on visiting every day for new music!
Now, as a rock fan, in general I shy away from indie as a genre. There is far too much baggage attached to it for my liking, it’s such an overly used term and I can’t help but feel many bands sound so alike it’s just pointless. Maybe it’s the apparent lack of passion so many bands seem to display – a trait which certainly does not ring true with this band. The Fears have gone through several name changes in their time together, the most recent being from Blue Sky Warning to their current moniker. So if I said their sound and style is about as diverse from conventional ‘indie’ as their names are, you might have some idea of what I mean. In short it’s big, really BIG; a grand, sweeping take on the traditional solo-less anthems of the charts today; the guitars ringing thick and rich, where usually they might be thin and forlorn. “Progressive Indie” is how the band describes it, and you can certainly hear it on this track “Impact”, already a crowd favourite.
And now it’s time for a progressive rock band from Wales! The name: Karnataka; the music: epic! The vocals of Rachel Jones are simply something else – haunting and mesmerising, and put atop of guitars and keyboards by Ian Jones and Johnathan Edwards builds amazingly deep and exciting music. Unfortunately, the band parted ways in 2004 citing “personal reasons” (that’s always the way!) but recently Ian has resurrected the band with a new lineup. The new band are currently touring, and maybe we’ll see an album soon? Here’s “Time Stands Still” from their last album “Delicate Flame of Desire”:
Ghotti was Bob (with the hat!), Howard, Ugo, Pat and a whole lot of musicianship. Unfortunately, they are no more – much to my dismay – but that doesn’t mean we can’t still enjoy their music. There’s something raw about the songs that I really loved to listen – a mix of good rock and roll, awesome lyrics and interesting vocals. They may be gone, but certainly not forgotten, and now all of their songs are available to download for free. To get you in the mood, here’s “Fly Away”:
Ten consistently put out great records of very typical progressive rock nature – epic stories of fantasy, history and love, backed up by a good load of hard melodic rock. Their latest album, “The Twilight Chronicles” is no different – and features over 70 minutes of awesome music. AOR – is it album oriented rock, or adult oriented rock? No one can seem to decide on genres these days – and that’s why they’re no good. Whatever it comes under, its just good ol’ rock! Here’s “Oblivion”:
And now for the completely different Blue October – and suffice to say, the harder to research – everything just tells me about the other one! So the British “Blue October” are an electro-pop band, complete with the 80s twist too – especially evident in the vocals of Ross Carter. They’ve put out three albums now, the latest being “One Day Silver, One Day Gold”, where “Somewhere” is taken from. Later this month, they will be releasing a 2 CD remastered attempt at their first album, “Incoming”, which you can preorder here.
