Because it’s been a while since we last featured any moody, atmospheric progressive rock, today’s track comes from British progressive rock band, Porcupine Tree. Some people I’ve given tracks of theirs to, often find it depressing music – but I think if you really get wrapped up into, the music is quite uplifting. Maybe not quite as much as the previously featured bonus track, Drown with Me. (How’s that for a depressingly-titled song with an uplifting tune?) In any case, I hope you’ll enjoy it. As always with the music on Something Chewie, I hope that you might from time to time peruse music from genres you wouldn’t usually frequent. On with the show, here’s today’s track “Glass Arm Shatteringâ€:
British five-piece band, Ben’s Brother, so named after lead singer Jamie Hartman’s bigger brother Ben, released their first album “Beta Male Fairytales†in July last year. A typically British alternative rock/pop band, the album included some great songs, quite often in the key of Keane, but that’s no bad thing. When it was released in the US later, a bonus track was included, that strikes me as even better. It was released in the UK, but just missed the top 40, reaching #41 in the charts. Apparently the band has another single on the horizon, but it might not see a release until 2009, when I guess its fairly likely another album will follow closely behind! For now, enjoy today’s track, “Stutteringâ€:
Formed in 1997, Love Pyschadelico is Kumi and Naoki, and a massive band in Hong Kong, Japan and Taiwan. After four successful albums, the band began to expand its fanbase, touring across Asia, and now 11 years on, they’re now trying to break through into America. I won’t attempt and fail to place their music in genres, although they’ve been described as having “big Brit-pop choruses†with “super-catchy guitar and keyboard buzzing-rockâ€. Vocalist Kumi often switches between Japanese and English, often completely without you noticing. All in all, good listenings, so enjoy today’s track, Love Pyschadelico’s “Standing Birdâ€:
A far gentler track, at least to start with, in today’s “Existentialism on Prom Nightâ€. You’ve already heard the backstory for Straylight Run, so it won’t be repeated today. Instead we’ll focus on the music. This is my personal favourite track from their entire repertoire, a brilliantly powerful piece of music that really builds up its momentum. The song is from their first album, which also has a few other spectacular tracks, as already featured, way back when. Last month, on June 10th to be precise, the band reportedly went into the studio to begin work on their third album – which is always exciting news when there’s new music about! For now, I hope you will enjoy today’s track:
Alternative Pop Rock Electro Indie (phew!) act Fresh Body Shop from Paris gives a awesomely rocking ensemble in their 2007 album, “Tastelessâ€. Whilst researching the band from their Jamendo profile, my limited French understanding made me think I had gone completely insane… but let’s not consider that for too long, and get on with the music. Lyrics, helpfully for the uninitiated in English, their album is an awesome mix of both ambient music and heavy hitting tunes, like the second track, “The Game†(which can be heard on their MySpace) Although slightly jarring, the jolt it gives you is a bizarre feeling, and creates an excellent atmosphere for the entire set of music. Today’s track, “Mr. Weirdo†is an example of the… weird music they produce. And, hey, eclectic music is what we’re all about here on Something Chewie! Enjoy today’s track!
I haven’t quite decided on whether to follow a Monday-Wednesday-Friday updating regime, or an every other day schedule, or possibly even “whenever I feel like it†– although that’s no way to get myself motivated. I guess I’ll leave it up to you to discover if I post on Sunday or not! Today we have a repeat offender as Thirteen Senses return to present their music stylings with an outing from their latest album, “Contact†released last year. Although they continue to – upsettingly – fail to break through to a mainstream audience, I can always completely lose my self listening to either of their two albums. Maybe you’ll find them just as endearing, or perhaps not, but here as today’s track is Thirteen Senses’ “Follow Meâ€:
I’m quite often glad that, when I am updating, I get the chance to mix a lot of music together. If you are a repeat visitor to Something Chewie, you might come for some of the more eclectic choices in music, or you might be here to find some awesome rock. I like to dish in some Japanese music too, not only just because I like it myself (and you’ve got to do what you love!) but because there is a chance you might enjoy it too if you’ve liked the other stuff I’ve posted. And if you don’t, well at least you’ can say you’ve experienced it. Yes, Something Chewie is back for the summer, and if all goes well, back for good – although I will be setting up a less strict schedule regime (seven days a week was what made me stop in the first place!) Today’s track is, as I’ve covered, from a Japanese rock band known as UVERworld – a fairly young band formed in 2005 that mixes rock electronic, and according to Wikipedia, beat-boxing. Gekidou, or ì¯í•’, is used as the latest opening song to the anime D.Gray-Man, but you don’t need to know anything about that to enjoy the music. And that’s just what I hope you shall do! Enjoy today’s track, “Gekidouâ€:
I swear I could have chosen any song from the album I wanted to feature today, Copeland’s 2005 album “In Motion”. It just so happens to be that on this particular day, I chose this one, for no reasons like the words it might include. I’m several hours late, but with good excuse – having had my tooth taken out today, I’m in quite a lot of missing-tooth-related pain (that’s both physically and mentally!). Send me pity, I’ll send you love! Fortunately enough, the good rocking tunes of Copeland are getting me over my problems! Enjoy today’s suspiciously picked “Choose the One Who Loves You More”:
Sorry for the long lack of updates, and I can’t promise anymore in the near future, but I thought I’d get in at least one before tomorrow! John Barrowman, known famously for the charming and debonair Captain Jack from Doctor Who and Torchwood is also a very representable musical performer, having appeared in many stage productions. Now he’s released his first pop album, “Another Side”, featuring a selection of cover tracks that mean a lot to him personally. The whole album is full of nice surprises, but my favourite by far, is his cover of “Feelin’ Good”:
UK born and bred, Rhyn are a four piece band from Buckinghamshire who specialise in rock of all kinds. After they started performing together in 2003, they started to self-produce and develop their own album: the aptly titled “Home Recording Made Easy”. Even though you can tell the production values are low, it actually adds to the feel – and you can see they have real devotion to trying to get their music out and in the open. The album was released in December of 2005 and featured some of their biggest tracks they’ve performed. As they say, they sometimes also experiment with using piano and slower songs, and this is one – my personal favourite of the album which is gentle and relaxing. The entire album was licensed under a Creative Commons license and can be downloaded for free from Jamendo, but you might also consider donating if you enjoy it! Here is Rhyn’s “Wishing the World Away”:
