Today’s short, sharp and snappy (alliteration rules) punk rock track comes from “Reggie and the Full Effect” – a band consisting entirely of Jason Dewees, formerly of The Get Up Kids. His latest album released in 2005, “Songs Not To Get Married To”, was quite a breaker for the musician – finally reaching more mainstream audience, especially with inclusion on EA’s Burnout 3 soundtrack. The band is quite a magnet for drama – with a lot of his music being based on nasty personal situations and various oddities on his MySpace (where all the cool kids hang out, of course *cough*). Still, there’s a reason the songs being played – its awesome, and its only downfall is its upsetting length, and the very abrupt end it has. Here’s “Congratulations Smack and Katy”:
My apologies for the lack of updates – a combination of being away since Thursday, some general feelings of ephemeralness and then plain stupidity prevented me from getting the goods out on time. If something changes on Something Chewie (see what I did there?) regarding planned schedule changes, you’d be the first to know!
Continuing a theme of theatrical, trailer-like music from previously featured E.S. Posthumus (check their website – there’s details and a sample of a new record coming soon!) comes Clint Mansell’s “Lux Aeterna” – latin for ‘eternal light’ – taken from the soundtrack to Requiem for a Dream, and subsequently used in several film trailers, such as Danny Boyle’s Sunshine, and an adapted version for The Two Towers, aptly called “Requiem for a Tower”. It starts of quiet, but once you hear it, you’ll recognise it and be incredibly captivated by it:
Today’s song was recommended by my friend David who had this very astute sentence to say: “I’ve got a banging song you can put on Something Chewie!” I couldn’t say no, so here we are with The Cult’s “Painted On My Heart”. You’ve most likely heard about their background, so there’s no need to go into detail – but this song was released in 2000 after their reunion from their 4 year hiatus, and was part of the soundtrack to the film “Gone in 60 Seconds”. It’s rocking, so give it a listen!
Sorry for the missing two days – a combination of work and illness prevented me from getting much done, but we’re back today with one of my favourite, and admittedly previously featured, artists: Scott Matthew. But since I did promise I would, I have to! But there’s that and I just love his music. Once again the song is a perfect example of Scott Matthew’s strange and wonderful voice – it’s different, but I think he pulls it off. Once again, it’s taken from a Yoko Kanno project (so much so on this weblog I might as well call it the Yoko Kanno and Friends music blog) but you can’t go wrong. I hope you enjoy, at least somewhat as much as I do, “Beauty Is Within Us”:
This isn’t a first appearance for Steve on Something Chewie – he’s not that long ago featured with his brother under The Contes. Steve Conte, like Scott Matthew before him (see previous post) is a vocalist often used by the Japanese soundtrack composer Yoko Kanno. And there’s a good reason for her picks – once again an amazing voice! And put that to good use with Yoko’s excellent music, and you’ve got another winning formula. “Living Inside the Shell” is taken, once again, from “Ghost in the Shell” and features the vocals of Shanti Snyder. Take a listen, if you will:

It’s somewhat unorthodox to post music from a game soundtrack, but then again, this weblog’s here to help you find new and interesting tracks – I don’t think it really matters where it comes from! Jun Senoue is a Japanese video game composer who has worked with the Sonic series since Sonic the Hedgehog 3. For the later entries in the games, Jun turned up the rock as the music when from bleeps to full audio streams. This particular track I’m very fond of – “Snowy Mountain” starts off very atmospherically, and gradually brings out the rock. It was definitely a really cool soundtrack for the fast-paced “Sonic Adventure” game:

Have you seen the Joss Whendon film Serenity? You should do! Despite being an amazing movie with a brilliant cast and excellent story, the soundtrack by David Newman is brilliant! And thus, here we are today, with my second favourite track from the soundtrack. Why not choose my first favourite? Because that’s the song that plays right before the credits roll, and I wouldn’t want to ruin the experience for you! Here’s “Going for a Ride”:
Ayaka Hirahara took centre stage in 2004 when she released “Jupiter”, a song with melody based on Gustav Holst’s The Planet Suite – and unsurprisingly, the Jupiter section in particular! It became one of the most top selling singles of 2004, and now she is now a famous Japanese pop singer with five albums under her belt, all of which have reached the top 10. Last year she performed the ending song to the game “ÅŒkami” which follows a god wolf and retells many of Japanese myths and legends. “Reset” plays once you finally complete the end boss, a trial I can proudly say I have completed! The soundtrack to the game is a massive beast – over 200 songs in five and a half hours over 5 discs – it’s quite detailed!
A little confession (of sorts) to make – I love soundtracks way too much than I should. And then couple that with the brilliantness of the brilliant show, Battlestar Galactica – and well, you’ll soon see why I hardly ever stop listening to this CD. Bear McCreary’s music on the Galactica soundtrack is fabulous: not only does he take influences from all over world music, but his music has such a top quality style and class. This track “Roslin and Adama” is paired to a scene where the two leaders of the futuristic society share a close moment in the second season. The third season soundtrack is due to come out later this summer.
